Since 1990, solid state lighting companies of US, Japan and Europe filed a plenty of core patents which enable them to build up a worldwide patent network. On contrast, Chinese companies have been in a bind, and the inferior position is forcing the whole Chinese SSL industry to look for a way out. China SSL Alliance (CSA) plays its particular role to organize and facilitate collaborations among Chinese SSL manufacturers and research institutes. A very important part of these collaborations are involved in patent sharing and cross licensing. A patent pool will be a practical mechanism piloting within CSA initially. To assure the formalization and efficiency of the patent pool, CSA assigned a specific group to manage, conduct and supervise all related affairs. As well, the group will facilitate the transformation from R&D to market application and advantage complementary between individual enterprises through studies of both domestic and overseas SSL industry. As a fruit of intellectual properties and technique standards, a patent pool possesses great powers in dominating the market. Chinese SSL industry in the phase of under developing has to utilize this power to strengthen the collective abilities and thus to upgrade its international competitiveness.
